|Many Lamps, One Light| tells the story of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary from the founding in 1853 of one of its predecessor institutions, Danville Theological Seminary in Kentucky, until the present. More than just an institutional history, this book opens a window on all of American Protestantism through its examination of this one seminary. Rick Nutt has organized his history of Louisville Seminary around two themes. The first shows the ways in which the school has reflected developments in culture and Christianity in the United States during the last 150 years. The history of the seminary mirrors the economic, social, political, intellectual, and ecclesiastical forces that have affected Protestantism and its institutions in the nation. Warfare, economic boom and bust, urbanization and industrialization, the rise of corporations, matters of racial justice, social change (especially for women), paradigm shifts in the understanding of reality, and other factors made an impact on the educational endeavor of Louisville Seminary. The ways in which this particular seminary responded to those forces can inform our understanding of developments in mainstream Protestantism as a whole. The second theme that Nutt explores is how, in the midst of changes in the way it educated people for ministry in the Presbyterian Church, Louisville Seminary has remained constant in its vision and commitment to serve the church. When the 1810 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church authorized the creation of denominational seminaries, it asserted that such institutions should be nurseries of vital piety as well as of sound theological learning, training persons for the ministry whoshall be lovers as well as defenders of the truth as it is in Jesus. Nutt shows that the responsibility of Louisville Seminary to the church, both ecumenical and Presbyterian, has always been foremost in its self-identity -- not always articulated, but at times very plainly so. The school retains that characteristic in the present.
